Millionaire Mike Sodrel (R-Indiana 9th), was
quoted (subscription only) in the Bloomington newspaper saying that many of the 46 million Americans without health insurance choose to be uninsured.
"They're young people who think they're bullet-proof" and who buy color televisions rather than pay for insurance, he said.
Wow. More below...
One wonders if the pressure of a
close campaign is getting to Sodrel.
It looks increasingly likely (though not a sure thing) that Hoosiers will choose once again to be represented by Baron Hill, a moderate Democrat who believes that health care is a right, not a privilege. I have plenty of disagreements with Mr. Hill on plenty of issues, but quotes like this make them seem much less important than ridding the Congress of Mike Sodrel.
More and more evidence is coming in that Republicans consider the 9th district their best chance to stem the Democratic tide in Indiana, but if Sodrel keeps saying nutty things like this, it may all be wishful thinking.
And if you need a good laugh at Millionaire Mike's expense, check out his campaign jingle-- yes, you read that right: in addition to running nonstop negative ads about how Baron Hill hates the flag, loves gay people, and kills babies, Sodrel has a cheesy jingle. To go with his cheesy mustache.
If you live in the Bloomington area, by the way, please make plans to come to our Drinking Liberally get-together next Tuesday night-- special guests will include Baron Hill and former Senator Birch Bayh!
